There are two things you will look for that will help you when buying to build your own; use non treated wood and; make sure the wood you use is a type of cedar or redwood. Both of these woods are good for outdoor use and have some natural abilities when it comes to fighting rot and bugs.
When looking for pre-built kits you can get pre-cut cedar beds that are easy to put together and are organic in nature. Some also take up little space so they are great for small spaces. Another very popular type is the recycled raised beds that are made of recycled milk jugs. Some of these providers use plastics from the US and some ship them in from China. If you care which is which, ask your provider. These can be painted but make sure you check the manufactures warranty first. The good news is they are recycled and you are helping the environment.
