Providing efficient light was a necessity in the old days as well as it is today. In the old days there were either torches, fires, or lanterns. Seeing as carrying a torch in the forest could cause a disaster and fires in general are not portable and dangerous; lanterns remain the only option left. There are many arguments against lanterns as they used to be a hassle to carry and light.
